A new study has found that teenagers who have abortions are not more likely depressed or have low self-esteem than their peers, their Schwangerschaften end to abortion.
The study, which is a researcher from Oregon State University and University of California, San Francisco, the first of both depression and low self-esteem as results with a national representative sample of young people to use.
The researchers found that young women in the study had an abortion not more likely become depressed or have low self-esteem or within the first year of pregnancy – five years later – than their peers who were pregnant were, but do not have an abortion.
The researchers uses data from 289 respondents on the national longitudinal study of adolescent health (add health) .Daten taken three survey waves from 1994-1995, respondents again a year later and then five years later. The study is available online and will appear in the December issue of perspectives on sexual and reproductive health.
Lead author Jocelyn Warren, post doctoral research associate at the OSU said the study was intended, a large gap in the abortion research to fill.
“We know the most teen pregnancies are not wanted pregnancies and an unwanted pregnancy can very stressful”, said Warren.
“Previous research has shown that adolescents girls, pregnant report more depression and lower self-esteem when compared to those who said they don’t.”What did we not, was whether psychological results for girls are worse to choose abortion.”This study says ‘No’.”
Warren stated that a report 2008 of the American Psychological Association no evidence found that mental health problems prove verursacht.Wegen of a lack of an induced abortion in adult women were draw any conclusions at this stage of the young.Warren said, the results of its study with teen girls with adult women were verified in the APA report consistent with the results of the studies.
“Abortion a very controversial issue and a hot political is obvious,” said Marie Harvey, Professor of public health at the OSU and leading national researchers in the field of health of the Frauen.Harvey was Warren’s thesis advisor and is co-author of the paper.
“The health of women, it is crucial that we the strictest possible studies and evidence-based information to the public, to inform” Harvey said.”This is our objective in the public health research, but can it even more important in areas such as abortion that highly politicized.”
According to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit State abortion policy, monitors require 34 States parental involvement in the youth abortion decisions. also mandate laws in seven States, women are recommended, only the negative psychological consequences of abortion, including “abortion traumatic stress syndrome,” an error not recognized by the American Psychological Association or the American Psychiatric Association.
Warren said it is important to note that individual women can have very different emotional responses to abortion.”But the average abortion seems no important psychological consequences – for adult women or teens.”
“” We have made policies the not evidence-based and have negative consequences for the health of women,”Harvey said.”"Everyone I can not think another type of health practice where a doctor is legally forced a patient have negative consequences to tell that were not proved or examined.”
Harvey said your study had different strengths. For one thing, were data from a national sample and are for young people study standard measures of depression and self-esteem was representative used to 12.Auch classes 7. Finally examines the longitudinal data psychological symptoms before, during, and years after pregnancy, Harvey said.
